STATEMENT from Steven Renderos, Executive Director at MediaJustice, on the passage of Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill”:
“Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” is now law, officially marking one of the biggest investments for state surveillance in our lifetime. Among cutting $1 trillion from Medicaid resulting in nearly 12-20 million people losing health insurance, and billions of dollars being cut from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, impacting over 40 million people who rely on food assistance, this legislation pours billions of our tax dollars into high-tech policing and deportation in one of the biggest wealth transfers to billionaires. Though the bill no longer includes the originally proposed 10-year AI moratorium, which the Trump administration is already plotting to enact separately as soon as later this month, this is still a massive handout for the Big Tech Oligarchy and AI Industry who stand to benefit the most from this legislation at the expense of our communities. Nearly tripling U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s budget of $23 billion and allocating $700 million for ICE’s “information technology investments to support enforcement and removal operations”, this new law accelerates the Trump administration and Big Tech’s partnership to kidnap, displace and oppress our communities by weaponizing technology against us at a scale we have not yet seen. We have a long fight ahead, and it’s clear to our people that continuing to fight against tech harms like surveillance and AI is paramount and central to resisting the current authoritarian regime.” said Steven Renderos, Executive Director at MediaJustice
